Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has launched EBOCAB, a new ride-hailing service designed to improve transportation, create jobs, and boost safety in the state. The governor unveiled the service at a new terminal in Abakaliki, the state capital, marking a big step in his plans to support local businesses and make movement easier for residents.
EBOCAB, which features the slogan “Our City, Our Ride,” utilizes a fleet of modern pickup trucks and SUVs repurposed for passenger trips. People can book rides using the EBOCAB mobile app, available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The app helps riders find a vehicle quickly and track their trips in real time.
EBOCAB Launch
Governor Nwifuru said the state created EBOCAB to solve problems like harassment, theft, and touting, especially around the Ebonyi State International Market, where some tricycle riders had been causing trouble.
“The criminal actions of some tricycle riders pushed us to launch EBOCAB. We want our people to move freely and safely,” he said during the launch.
EBOCAB Runs 24/7 and Aims to Boost Jobs and Security
EBOCAB will run 24 hours a day, offering a reliable option even at night. The terminal, located on Ogoja Road near the Ecumenical Centre, will serve as the main hub for operations. The fleet includes 60 pickup trucks and 30 SUVs, ready to transport both airport travellers and local commuters.
The governor plans to employ many young people as drivers and support staff, helping reduce unemployment and improve safety. With all rides tracked and regulated, the state hopes to lower crime and build trust in public transport.
However, people have raised concerns about using pickup trucks for passenger transport. They believe these vehicles are better for carrying goods and argue that the state should have invested in mass transit buses, especially since Abakaliki is not a large city.
In response, supporters say EBOCAB is a smart move to modernize the city’s transport system. They believe it fits well with the governor’s broader goals, which include infrastructure upgrades, agricultural growth, and youth empowerment.

EBOCAB App Makes Booking Easy
The EBOCAB mobile app connects users with nearby drivers in under five minutes. It has a simple design, allowing passengers to book rides easily and track vehicles on a live map. The service also promises affordable prices to make it accessible to everyone.
Governor Nwifuru announced that EBOCAB will begin full operations on May 28, 2025, with over 100 vehicles on the road. The government plans to grow the fleet and improve the service over time.
Governor Nwifuru expressed his excitement about the new service on social media, writing, “We have launched our new transport system, EBOCAB. It will improve how we move, create jobs, grow the economy, and make our state safer and better.”
Chief Godwin Ogbaga, former Minister of Power and Steel, praised the project. “People can now ride in clean, air-conditioned vehicles to their destinations. This will boost our economy and improve safety,” he said.
Mr. Collins Igboke, Ebonyi’s Commissioner for Transportation, also urged residents to embrace the new technology. He believes EBOCAB will help create a crime-free state.
