In a bold move towards sustainability, Nigerian mobility company Shuttlers has rolled out 20 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles, marking a significant shift in its operations. The addition, which occurred in the first quarter of 2025, already saw the vehicles complete 1,484 trips within three months, showing early adoption and usage.
Shuttlers’ CEO and co-founder, Damilola Olokesusi, described the rollout as more than a business decision. “This move wasn’t just a decision—it was about making a real impact for us, our customers, and the environment,” she shared in a post on LinkedIn.
The update comes in response to rising fuel costs after Nigeria scrapped its fuel subsidy in 2023, which triggered a 200% hike in petrol prices. Since then, CNG has emerged as a cheaper alternative, retailing at around ₦230 per litre and known to last longer than petrol.
Can CNG Vehicles Be Safe and Sustainable?
Olokesusi noted that switching to CNG has helped cut transport costs by 29% for riders while also reducing the startup’s carbon footprint. But despite the appeal, safety concerns remain a major issue surrounding CNG-powered vehicles—especially those converted from petrol engines.
Recent incidents involving CNG-related explosions have sparked public concern, but Shuttlers says it is staying ahead of the curve. Olokesusi explained that the fleet uses fireproof CNG canisters with automatic fire extinguishers. “They activate instantly in the rare event of a fire,” she assured.
To further reinforce safety, the company also runs routine inspections through its quality assessment team and trained drivers.
This shift aligns with government initiatives encouraging CNG adoption. In 2023, authorities introduced payment plans for vehicle conversions, a mobile app for CNG retrofitting, and a promise to distribute 2,000 CNG tricycles to young Nigerians in the transport sector.
Shuttlers was founded in Lagos in 2016 to address the city’s informal transport challenges. Since then, it has grown into a trusted mobility platform for corporate professionals, expanding its reach beyond Lagos and raising $5.6 million in funding.
