The TIN, issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service, has become central to daily economic life. From banking to government services, the number now determines who can access what.

Tax officials say the shift reflects Nigeria’s growing focus on compliance and transparency. As a result, individuals and businesses without a TIN increasingly face limitations. A valid TIN is now required for most formal financial activities. This includes opening bank accounts, filing taxes, applying for public loans, and accessing government incentives. 

How to Generate TIN Number Online

Here’s a simple step on how to generate TIN number online in Nigeria:

The renewed attention on TIN registration comes as authorities expand Nigeria’s digital tax system. The goal is to bring more people into the formal tax net.

In recent months, banks and public agencies have stepped up checks. Many services now require a verified TIN before approval.

For individuals: The process has become largely digital. Applicants can now register using existing identity records, such as their Bank Verification Number or National Identification Number.

  • Go to the JTB site and complete the TIN application form.
  • Enter Your BVN or NIN – Enter Bank Verification Number (BVN) or National Identification Number (NIN).
  • Upload Documents – Present a valid ID and a utility bill.
  • Submit Application – This will review and submit your online form.
  • Verification – You will get a notice after your TIN has been issued.
  • Fast trick: Now that you have a BVN or NIN, visit the JTB verification portal to see whether an auto-allocated TIN has been assigned to you.
  • For businesses: Registration remains tied to company records already held by the Corporate Affiars Comission (CAC). This helps reduce duplication and speeds up approval.
  • Go to the registration portal of TIN.
  • Provide your company name, registration number, and address.
  • Upload the certificate of incorporation, MEMART, directors’ details, and utility bill.
  • Submit your application.
  • Your TIN will be reviewed and issued by the FIRS, normally in 10 business days.

Officials say many Nigerians already have a TIN without realising it. In some cases, numbers were automatically generated during earlier registrations.

Verification has also become easier. Once issued, a TIN can be checked on the FIRS portal to confirm that it is active and usable. Here’s how to check:
