Tech Community Demands Justice for Late Bumpa Co-founder

The tech community is rallying for justice following the shocking death of Adetunji ‘TeeJay’ Opayele, Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of Nigerian retail automation startup Bumpa. A petition directed at the Lagos State Government has gathered over 20,000 signatures, demanding stricter legal action against the driver responsible for the fatal crash.

Opayele passed away on March 5, 2025, after suffering severe injuries in a road accident the previous night. According to the petition initiated by ‘TeeJay Legacy‘ on change.org, he was returning from the gym around 10:20 p.m. on March 4, riding his power bike along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos, when a vehicle allegedly driven by Biola Adams-Odutayo struck him. MTN South Africa and Lynk Global Achieve Africa’s First Satellite-to-Mobile Phone Call

MTN South Africa, in partnership with LEO satellite provider Lynk Global, has successfully conducted Africa’s first satellite-to-mobile phone call. The trial took place in the North West province of Vryburg, marking a significant step toward enhancing connectivity in remote and underserved areas.

The test call allowed MTN and Lynk Global to evaluate voice call quality and SMS capabilities over a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite connection. According to MTN South Africa CEO Charles Molapisi, the trial serves as proof of concept for integrating satellite technology with MTN’s existing terrestrial network, ensuring broader coverage beyond traditional cell towers. African Development Bank to Invest $331 Million in Lesotho

AltSchool to Bring AI Education to Africa in Local Languages

Nigerian edtech startup AltSchool is on a mission to make AI education accessible across Africa, breaking language barriers along the way. The company has launched AI for 10M Africans, an initiative designed to teach AI to learners at all levels, from beginners to advanced professionals. To ensure widespread accessibility, the courses will be offered in multiple languages, including Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Swahili, French, Portuguese, and Arabic.

Speaking at a media conference, AltSchool Africa CEO Adewale Yusuf described the initiative as “more than an educational programme; a movement to create opportunities and bridge the knowledge gap.” He emphasised the importance of ensuring that Africans are not left behind in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
