Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited is staging a quiet comeback. The state-owned firm now carries more than half of Nigeria’s broadcast traffic.

This marks a sharp turnaround from its position just two years ago. At the time, concerns had grown over its limited use despite heavy government investment.

The update came from the company’s chief executive, Nkechi Jane Egerton-Idehen, during a press briefing in Lagos.

She revealed that several major institutions have returned to the platform. These include the National Broadcasting Commission, Galaxy Backbone, and National Identity Management Commission.

NigComSat broadcast traffic rises again

The rise in NigComSat broadcast traffic reflects a shift in strategy. The company has focused on winning back old clients while attracting new ones.

According to the CEO, some organisations had left years ago. However, they have now returned after renewed engagement. “Now we are carrying DSO traffic for NBC. We are carrying traffic for Galaxy. Galaxy used to be a client, like 10 years ago, they left at some point and we had to win them back.”

She also confirmed the scale of the recovery. “Today, we carry over 50% of the country’s broadcast traffic. More than half of the broadcast stations in Nigeria are on NigComSat.”

This growth did not happen overnight. The company worked to rebuild trust and improve service quality. As a result, institutions that once moved to other providers are coming back.

A shift after years of underuse

For years, NigComSat faced criticism over underutilisation. Despite large investments, its role in the communications sector remained limited.

Now, the picture is changing. With more broadcast traffic returning to its network, the company is regaining relevance.

At the same time, it is targeting telecom firms and other service providers. This suggests a broader push to expand beyond government clients.
