Nigeria’s digital economy received a notable boost this week as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised the official launch of Lebara Nigeria. His reaction came through a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, confirming the administration’s support for the new entrant in the telecom market.
The President described the move as a clear sign that investor confidence in Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape remains strong. He highlighted the country’s potential to grow into one of Africa’s most strategic technology hubs, especially as new operators continue to invest in local infrastructure.
President Tinubu congratulated the company’s leadership team—led by CEO Teniola Stuffman—for expanding connectivity, creating jobs and contributing to a more resilient digital system. He also noted that such private-sector commitments help push financial inclusion and innovation across critical sectors.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulates Lebara Nigeria on its official launch, describing the milestone as a strong vote of confidence in Nigeria’s digital economy and its future as a leading technology and investment destination in Africa,” the statement read.
“The President commends the leadership and partners of Lebara Nigeria, including Mrs Teniola Stuffman, the Chief Executive, for their commitment to expanding telecommunications access, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening the nation’s digital infrastructure.”
A Sector Showing Steady Momentum
President Tinubu also referenced recent data showing that Nigeria’s telecom sector grew by 5.78% year-on-year in Q3 2025, contributing more than 14% to national GDP. He noted that these figures illustrate why telecommunications remain one of the most influential contributors to economic expansion.
He further acknowledged the support from the British High Commission, represented at the launch by Deputy High Commissioner Johny Baxter. According to him, this collaboration underscores deepening diplomatic and commercial ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The President also extended appreciation to the company’s Advisory Board, led by Chairman Bimbo Ashiru, reaffirming that Nigeria remains committed to policies that attract long-term investment.
What Lebara Nigeria Plans to Offer
Lebara Nigeria has now begun full operations in the country with mobile services tailored for individuals, students and businesses. As part of the wider Lebara Group, the Nigerian arm will tap into the brand’s global experience to expand local connectivity and offer more affordable communication options.
Information from the company’s official website shows that its plans include products for Nigerians in the diaspora, small businesses and campus users. The launch also introduces community-based internet hubs and partnerships aimed at supporting digital inclusion across underserved areas.
With its arrival, Lebara becomes one of the newest players in Nigeria’s telecom space, a move expected to strengthen ongoing efforts to widen digital access nationwide.
