Vitel Wireless has completed its integration with MTN Nigeria, securing a roaming partnership that could reshape mobile services in the country. This collaboration enables Vitel to launch full-scale operations across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, delivering both data and voice services through MTN’s well-established infrastructure.

According to Chudi Nwabueze, Chief Operating Officer of Vitel Wireless, the partnership sets the tone for a new phase in Nigeria’s telecommunications market.

The seamless integration with MTN Nigeria’s extensive network infrastructure enables Vitel Wireless to deliver high-quality voice, data, and value-added services across the country,” Nwabueze said.

By tapping into MTN’s nationwide coverage, Vitel plans to introduce flexible plans, competitive pricing, and tailored packages to meet a wide variety of customer needs—especially in underserved regions.

A Pioneer in Nigeria’s Growing MVNO Space

The agreement follows the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) licensing of 46 Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). Vitel stands out as a leader among them. It was the first MVNO in Nigeria to be issued a numbering plan along with national and international routing codes, giving it a head start in a competitive space.

Vitel has already made history several times. It’s the first to launch a location awareness network in Africa, the first to establish interconnectivity with Airtel, Glo, and 9Mobile, and now, the first to complete a roaming partnership with a major MNO—MTN.

This achievement reflects our dedication to delivering accessible and innovative mobile solutions to Nigerian consumers,” Nwabueze added. “We look forward to building a strong presence and contributing to Nigeria’s digital transformation.”

This move is expected to add more options to Nigeria’s 200+ million mobile users, who are often frustrated by limited choices and fluctuating service quality. With the rise of MVNOs, competition in the sector could also drive down costs and fuel innovation.

I am passionate about crafting stories, vibing to good music (and making some too), debating Nigeria’s political future like it’s the World Cup, and finding the perfect quiet spot to work and unwind.
