Nigeria’s telecom industry is set for disruption with the arrival of Vitel Wireless, a company that blends the agility of a tech startup with the scale of a mobile operator. Officially launched with its 0712 GSM series, Vitel says its mission is to give both businesses and consumers tools that match global standards.

At the core of its offering is Location Awareness Technology (LAT), embedded directly into SIM cards. This is the first time such technology is being introduced in Africa. LAT enables real-time tracking for supply chains, logistics, and asset management, while also offering consumer-focused safety features for families.

Telecom should be more than calls and data. We are building a platform that blends mobility, security, and digital efficiency, giving Nigerian businesses and users tools that match global standards,” said Kenneth Emeka Nwabueze, Chairman and CEO of Vitel Wireless.

Innovation Beyond Calls and Data

The company is pushing beyond the basics of voice and internet. Its XPhone platform is designed for professionals who need advanced communication tools. The Digital Corporate Phone (PBX) provides a cloud-based option for enterprises still relying on outdated infrastructure. Meanwhile, the OGA App combines communication and security into one digital hub.

Vitel is also adopting eSIM technology, already widely used in Europe and North America. This gives mobile-first users, frequent travellers, and high-net-worth individuals the flexibility of switching networks without juggling multiple physical SIM cards.

A $10 Billion Industry Ripe for ChangeNigeria’s telecom sector, valued at more than $10 billion, has long been dominated by legacy operators. But as businesses demand mobility and security, there is pressure to innovate. Vitel is positioning itself as both a challenger and an enabler, introducing infrastructure-level changes starting from the SIM card.

I am passionate about crafting stories, vibing to good music (and making some too), debating Nigeria’s political future like it’s the World Cup, and finding the perfect quiet spot to work and unwind.
