Nigeria Expands Basic Education Curriculum with Digital and Technical Skills

Nigeria’s federal government has introduced digital literacy, GSM repair, solar installation, CCTV and intercom setup, among other technical skills, into the basic education curriculum. This reform aims to equip students with practical, job-ready skills, aligning education with industry demands.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) confirmed the development in a statement, highlighting that the inclusion of IT, robotics, and hands-on technical skills is part of ongoing economic sector reforms. The government’s goal is to boost employability and encourage early exposure to essential trades.

A Broader Range of Learning Opportunities

The revised curriculum introduces a variety of subjects that cover construction, technology, agriculture, and entrepreneurship. Students will now have the opportunity to learn skills such as digital literacy, which includes IT and robotics, as well as GSM repair and satellite/TV antenna installation. Other areas covered include solar power installation and maintenance, CCTV and intercom system setup, event decoration, makeup, interior design, and agriculture, which encompasses crop production, beekeeping, and livestock farming.

The updated curriculum will be rolled out nationwide from January 2025, impacting primary and junior secondary students. This shift is expected to create a more skill-oriented generation, preparing young Nigerians for the evolving job market and digital economy.
