Africa’s gaming market is witnessing explosive growth, with Egypt emerging as the continent’s dominant player. Among the countries driving Africa’s gaming expansion, Egypt led the market in 2024, contributing $368 million, which is 20.4% of the continent’s total gaming revenue. Nigeria and South Africa followed closely, generating $300 million and $278 million, respectively.
However, while these three countries dominated in terms of market size, Eritrea and Niger recorded the highest revenue growth, signaling rising interest in gaming. In contrast, Equatorial Guinea and the Seychelles lagged, showing the slowest market expansion.
According to a report from Carry1st, an African gaming and digital content publisher, in collaboration with research platform Newzoo, Africa’s gaming sector surged to $1.8 billion in revenue in 2024, marking a 12.4% growth from the previous year.
The report identifies mobile gaming as the driving force behind this surge, accounting for 90% of total revenue ($1.6 billion). Out of 349 million gamers across the continent, a staggering 304 million played on mobile, an increase of 32 million players from 2023.
This significant gap in numbers from the previous year points to Africa’s growing smartphone adoption, improved internet access, and the rise of innovative payment solutions that make gaming more accessible. With mobile gaming capturing 87% of Africa’s total gaming market share, the continent’s gaming industry recorded an impressive 2.1% year-over-year (YOY) growth, a rate six times higher than the global average.
