Officials of UNICEF and Airtel Africa

UNICEF, Airtel Africa, and the Ministry of Education have collaborated to bridge Nigeria’s digital education gap, reaching nearly 600,000 children in 1,260 schools. This movement leverages technology to provide standardized learning, ensuring even students in remote areas have access to quality education.

During a visit to St. Agnes Primary School in Lagos, Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar emphasized the importance of bridging the digital divide. “Education is key to Africa’s future, especially with 40% of the population under 16. Through our partnership with UNICEF, we are providing students and teachers with connectivity and devices via the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP),” he said.

He highlighted the role of the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP) in delivering connectivity and devices to students and teachers, enhancing learning outcomes. The Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP) is an online, mobile, and soon-to-be offline platform, designed to provide continuous, high-quality education.

Celine Lafoucriere, UNICEF Chief of the Lagos Office, highlighted the program’s sustainability, stating that 1.8 million students are already registered on the NLP, with plans for further expansion in 2025. She stressed UNICEF’s commitment to ensuring access to education, especially for vulnerable children and girls, as part of a broader strategy that also addresses water, sanitation, health, and nutrition needs.

Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, also praised the initiative, stressing that digital learning is the future. He explained that the Lagos government is integrating digital tools into its education system, ensuring teachers and students benefit from interactive, tech-driven lessons.

As technology transforms classrooms, the NLP ensures no child is left behind, helping students and teachers thrive in the digital era.
