Telecom giant MTN is stepping up efforts to close Africa’s digital skills gap by launching the MTN Skills Academy, a free platform offering training in digital and financial literacy across its operational regions. The initiative is designed to improve access to career guidance, learning resources, and practical knowledge — all aimed at boosting employment opportunities for young Africans.

The academy, now open for registration, allows users to take a personalised career survey that helps map out future career paths based on their interests. These results are then linked to resources that explain each career field, how to apply for further study, and where training opportunities are available.

Our goal is to increase digital literacy and equip people with the tools to thrive in the modern economy,” MTN said in a statement announcing the programme.

Personalised Learning Meets Career Planning

After completing the survey, learners are guided through a mix of digital and financial training courses offered by MTN’s education partners. These entry-level courses are accessible immediately upon sign-up and offer foundational skills. Once a learner completes at least three of these, they gain access to more advanced content, including micro-degree programmes tailored for specific digital careers.

The MTN Skills Academy also includes a career guidance component, helping users explore a wide range of career fields, identify where they can gain qualifications, and learn how to move forward in their chosen path. From fintech to remote work opportunities, the platform blends learning with empowerment.

This initiative follows a wave of corporate-backed education programmes aimed at closing Africa’s widening tech skills gap. While demand for digital expertise continues to grow, access to quality, affordable training remains a major hurdle for many across the continent.
