Badili, a Kenyan-based startup, has secured a $400,000 loan from Proparco through the Bridge facility, aimed at enhancing access to affordable refurbished smartphones across Africa. This funding supports Badili’s mission to tackle electronic waste and provide budget-friendly devices to low-income communities.
The Bridge facility offers innovative African companies like Badili short-term financing of up to 24 months to bridge development gaps between investment rounds. With this support, Badili intends to expand its services, boosting connectivity and promoting sustainability throughout Kenya and beyond.
A Sustainable Approach to Digital Inclusion
Badili’s model focuses on refurbishing electronic devices for redistribution across Africa, thereby reducing the environmental impact of producing new smartphones. This initiative aligns with Proparco’s broader mission of promoting eco-friendly practices and expanding socio-economic opportunities across the continent.
By providing affordable smartphones, Badili aims to empower marginalised communities, enabling them to access essential digital services like mobile payments, online education, and telemedicine. The initiative also strengthens local economies by enhancing digital access for more people.
Rishabh Lawania, Founder and CEO of Badili, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with Proparco, stating: “Getting validation and trust from Proparco is a great boost to the morale of the team that is building a sustainable company that enables Africans to own smartphones for a fraction of the cost of a new one. As we enter into the phase of profitability and expansion into other regions across Africa; it’s a great pleasure to welcome one of the most progressive and supportive DFI in the world as a part of Badili’s billion-dollar journey.”
Proparco’s Head of the Venture Capital Division, Fabrice Perez, highlighted the importance of Badili’s work, saying: “Badili’s initiative to refurbishing smartphones locally in Kenya is a game-changer. This project not only promotes economic resilience but also underscores the importance of sustainability in today’s digital economy. Proparco is proud to support a venture that directly aligns with our objectives of fostering environmental responsibility, economic opportunity, and social inclusion in Africa.”
Driving Africa’s Billion-Dollar Tech Journey
For Proparco, the investment in Badili represents a strategic step towards addressing global challenges related to electronic waste and the exploitation of mineral resources. The collaboration demonstrates Proparco’s dedication to supporting projects that promote environmental responsibility and empower individuals through improved digital access.
This partnership is expected to accelerate Badili’s expansion efforts and contribute to making technology more accessible to underserved communities. With a focus on affordability, digital inclusion, and environmental sustainability, Badili continues to reshape Africa’s smartphone market.
