A new name is entering Africa’s defence conversation. Terra Industries has secured $11.75 million in fresh capital to scale its security technology.

The defence technology startup was founded by two young Nigerians. Nathan Nwachuku is 22. Maxwell Maduka is 24. Both launched the company in 2024.

Now, Terra Industries funding marks one of the largest early-stage raises in African defence tech. The company announced the round as it officially emerged from stealth.

The goal is clear. Terra Industries wants to build autonomous security systems that protect critical infrastructure across Africa. These systems will operate on land, in the air, and at sea.

Why Investors are Betting on African Defence Tech

The funding round was led by US venture firm 8VC. The firm was founded by Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale. Other participants included Valor Equity Partners, Lux Capital, SV Angel, Leblon Capital, Silent Ventures, Nova Global, and angel investor Micky Malka.

Alex Moore, Defence Partner at 8VC and a Palantir board director, had already joined Terra Industries’ board last year. That move signalled early confidence in the defence technology startup.

Terra Industries says Africa is entering a key industrial phase. The continent attracts close to $100 billion in infrastructure investment each year. It also holds about 30% of the world’s critical mineral reserves.

However, much of this infrastructure sits in remote regions. These areas face insecurity, terrorism, organised crime, and illegal extraction. Sub-Saharan Africa and the Sahel remain especially exposed.

Nathan Nwachuku believes this risk threatens progress. “Africa is industrialising faster than any other region, with new mines, refineries, and power plants emerging every month,” he said. “But none of that progress will matter if we don’t solve the continent’s greatest Achilles heel, which is insecurity and terrorism.”

Because of this challenge, Terra Industries is building what it calls Africa’s first defence technology prime. The plan is a vertically integrated platform of autonomous security systems tailored to local terrain and operating realities.

The new Terra Industries funding will expand manufacturing capacity. It will also grow engineering and software teams. In addition, more autonomous security systems will be deployed across allied African countries.
