In a game-changing move, Vodacom Lesotho has opened its M-Pesa mobile money service to all mobile users in the country, regardless of their network provider. This expansion removes previous restrictions, enabling more Basotho to participate in the digital economy without switching networks.

A New Era for Digital Finance

Since its launch in 2013, M-Pesa has played a vital role in Lesotho’s financial inclusion efforts. With this latest upgrade, more users can access secure and reliable mobile money services, including payments, transfers, and banking solutions.

Speaking at the launch event, Vodacom Lesotho CEO Mohale Ralebitso highlighted the significance of this expansion.

“It is fitting that as M-Pesa matures into its teenage years, we are able to amplify its benefits to an even greater number of Basotho. Our vision is of an inclusive digital future for Lesotho, and this expansion is a significant stride in that direction.”

Reaching More Basotho, Faster

The ‘All Access’ initiative initially targets smartphone users, with plans already underway to ensure those without smartphones can also benefit. Palesa Mphunyetsane, Managing Director of VCL Financial Services, reinforced this commitment:

“To truly accelerate financial inclusion, we must actively eradicate any impediments to access. Whilst this initiative is initially focused on smartphone users, we are diligently working on solutions to include Basotho without smartphones in the near future.”

New users can now register for M-Pesa easily through the Google Play Store by providing their mobile number, national ID name, and ID number. This step simplifies onboarding and ensures a seamless user experience.
