Equinix has officially opened its newest facility in Lagos, the Equinix LG2.3 Data Center. This expansion marks a major milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. The newly opened Equinix LG2.3 Data Center offers advanced colocation and secure interconnection solutions. It is designed to empower businesses across the region with cutting-edge digital support.

According to Equinix, the launch shows the company’s dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global digital economy. The company also said it reflects Equinix’s long-term strategy to support the region’s technological growth and digital adoption.
The inauguration event was led by Bruce Owen, President of EMEA at Equinix, alongside other top executives. The ceremony included a ribbon cutting at the newly expanded site, followed by an official visit to the Governor of Lagos State. Additionally, the company hosted an exclusive customer engagement event, bringing together key stakeholders from Nigeria’s business and technology sectors. During the event, attendees engaged in discussions about Equinix’s role in digital transformation and explored how its solutions foster innovation and business agility in the region.
Speaking on the expansion, Bruce Owen emphasized Nigeria’s significance to Equinix’s global operations. “Nigeria is a crucial market for Equinix. Today’s opening is a clear demonstration of our continued commitment to invest and grow digital infrastructure that will benefit the many thousands of businesses in Nigeria and on the continent as a whole. I am deeply encouraged by the enthusiastic partnerships and innovations emerging from this dynamic region, which continue to inspire our commitment to Nigeria’s digital and sustainable future,” he stated.
Equinix For A Green Africa
As part of its sustainability initiatives, Equinix executives also participated in a tree-planting ceremony. This, it said, symbolizes the company’s investment in greener operations and efforts to reduce its global carbon footprint.
Wole Abu, Managing Director of Equinix West Africa, also highlighted the growing demand for digital solutions in Africa and the role of data centers in economic development. “While Africa’s demand for data solutions is still evolving compared to more mature markets, the continent is demonstrating strong potential for digital adoption and innovation. To meet this growing need, Equinix is actively advancing three major data center projects in Nigeria, with future expansion plans for Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and South Africa,” he said.

MainOne Acquisition
The expansion comes in the wake of Equinix’s $320 million acquisition of MainOne in April 2022. MainOne has arguably been Nigeria’s leading internet connectivity provider. Founded in 2010 by Funke Opeke, MainOne operates an extensive digital infrastructure network. Its network includes 1,200 kilometers of terrestrial fiber across southern Nigeria and a subsea cable linking Nigeria to Portugal.
MainOne has indeed been instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s digital landscape. It has done so particularly through its investment in fiber-optic infrastructure in Lagos’s Yaba district. Often referred to as Nigeria’s Silicon Valley, Yaba has been instrumental to the tech ecosystem over the years.. This development played a crucial role in fostering Nigeria’s startup ecosystem, benefiting companies like Andela, CcHUB, Paga, Hotels.ng, and Flutterwave.
