On Tuesday, the internet was very shaky as a Cloudflare outage temporarily took several of the largest websites including the web offline. Users found that X, ChatGPT and some major sites were not loading, and some had found odd delays on services that traditionally perform well. At around 11:30 GMT, reports overwhelmed Downdetctor and people were frustrated as pages were showing strange error messages.

Cloudflare reported that there was an unusual traffic spike into one of Cloudflare services starting at 11:20 UTC that caused normal operations to be disrupted. According to the company, the firm was making frantic efforts to get full stability but it said it did not yet have the cause of the sudden surge in traffic. To most users of X, the site merely reported that it was addressing an issue with an internal server that was related to Cloudflare.

ChatGPT also showed that it issued its warning, requesting that users who are affected remove blocks to cloudflare.com, which it said. The alert was unexpected and people were wondering why they were now unable to do their usual window shopping as it was a complex thing.

Though Cloudflare later reported that it began experiencing improvements, it cautioned that individual customers would continue to experience increased error rates as engineers engaged in remediation.

The Reason One Outage Became So Widespread on the Web

Cloudflare contributes immensely to internet security in the world and the systems exist to ensure that a visitor is a genuine human or a robot. The company approximates that about 20 percent of the entire web-based sites use its tools in one way or another. Thus, any disturbance, such as the one that occurred on Tuesday, spreads all over the web in a short period of time.

Even Downdetector, the place where users of the site are flowing when everything goes wrong, showed its own error messages at least briefly. The leader of NetBlocks, Alp Toker, called the situation an indicator of the level of dependence of the websites on Cloudflare to avoid cyberattacks. According to him, this excessive dependency has unwillingly transformed the company into one of the largest single points of failure in the internet.

The other large technological providers have already experienced major disruptions in recent weeks. Last month, Amazon Web Services outage went down and affected over 1,000 services, and soon after, Microsoft Azure had a problem. Jake Moore of ESET says that these events demonstrate that the digital ecosystem is fragile. He said that several companies use Cloudflare, Microsoft and Amazon merely since there are not so many that can offer the same level.

With the outage at Cloudflare subsiding later on Tuesday afternoon, a vast number of users could resume their normal online activities. However, the incident also brought new concerns regarding the increasing reliance of the internet by a few companies that do the work of ensuring the flow of internet traffic around the world.
