The Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC) made a strategic stop at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH). Led by Mr Lateef Alani, LASRIC’s visit was all about connecting with grant beneficiaries. They also explored their progress and spotlighted Lagos as a future-forward city on the global research map.
The university’s Acting Director of Research, Innovation and Development, Dr Adekemi Dahunsi, welcomed the delegation with great enthusiasm. Her reception laid a vibrant foundation for the visit. Later, the team paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun Denloye. “LASRIC continues to be a pillar of support for innovation within our institution,” he stated, encouraging the council to keep investing in promising research that addresses Nigeria’s development gaps.
Turning Challenges into Solutions with Science and Grit
During the visit, LASRIC interacted with some of LASUSTECH’s brightest minds—grant winners who are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
Dr Tolulope Ibukun Ojo’s research into converting Esuru yams into nutritious gari stood out for its direct impact on food security. She urged for “increased funding to scale production,” as the project could improve nutrition and boost regional food systems. Meanwhile, Engr. Kayode Rafiu Olalere demonstrated how innovation can meet sustainability. His tile production technique uses plastic waste to create durable, interlocking flooring, offering a compelling solution to Nigeria’s plastic problem.
Food scientist Dr Oladotun Olakanmi Oguntoyinbo introduced his plantain peel cookie concept. Turning what’s often thrown away into a healthy snack, he highlighted the potential of waste valorisation in the food sector. “We need to rethink waste and recognise its hidden value,” he explained during his presentation.
Engineering a Smarter Tomorrow
The LASRIC team also toured the College of Engineering and Technology, where advanced tools and research infrastructure reinforced LASUSTECH’s status as a key tech institution. This visit gave context to the ideas presented—showcasing a campus not just brimming with innovation, but also equipped to nurture it.
The collaboration between LASRIC and LASUSTECH goes beyond funding. It’s about shaping a future powered by solutions to real-world problems. From food innovation to eco-friendly construction, the showcased projects demonstrated a new generation of researchers. And they are stepping up to drive change.
