MTN Group has announced a major partnership with Meta to improve the performance of real-time communication apps like WhatsApp across 12 of its African markets. The move is expected to significantly enhance the quality and consistency of both voice and video calls, offering users a much smoother experience.

This joint effort focuses on blending application-aware networks with network-aware apps. By doing so, MTN and Meta aim to better align how calls are delivered across mobile networks. Since Mobile World Congress 2024, both teams have been working behind the scenes — collecting data, testing systems, and applying network upgrades — all to ensure stronger, more reliable connections for everyday users.

Nigeria Takes the Lead in Real-Time Calling Innovation

The new technology was rolled out first in Nigeria, where early performance indicators have been encouraging. According to MTN Nigeria, key metrics have improved by up to 50%, a major win for users who rely on apps like WhatsApp for everyday conversations.

“This implementation further demonstrates our commitment to enhancing our customers’ digital experience,” said Yahaya Ibrahim, CTO of MTN Nigeria. “We’re pleased with the remarkable improvement in our real-time communication services.”

Meta’s Diego Marí also weighed in on the development, calling the collaboration “a step toward deploying advanced solutions for an unparalleled real-time experience in Nigeria.” He added that the initiative reflects Meta’s push to improve service quality and maintain traffic efficiency.

The partnership is expected to expand across 11 additional African markets, although specific countries have not yet been named. As both companies double down on improving real-time mobile communication, users across the continent could soon enjoy faster, clearer, and more stable calls on their favourite apps.

I am passionate about crafting stories, vibing to good music (and making some too), debating Nigeria’s political future like it’s the World Cup, and finding the perfect quiet spot to work and unwind.
