Nigeria’s digital infrastructure just got a massive vote of confidence. The Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) has officially hit a landmark peak of 1 Terabit per second (Tbps) in internet traffic — a first in the nation’s history.

The milestone, shared by IXPN on its official channels, reflects more than just a spike in numbers. It highlights how far the country’s internet ecosystem has evolved. From improved local content delivery to reduced latency and lower costs, this milestone signals a maturing internet experience for Nigerians across the board.

“To our community of ISPs, content providers, CDNs, and stakeholders, thank you for making this possible. Together, we’re building a stronger, faster, and more connected Nigeria,” the announcement read.

The 1Tbps milestone isn’t just about technical success — it’s a marker of progress in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey. With more Internet Service Providers (ISPs), data centres, and content networks connecting locally through IXPN, the country is seeing less dependence on international bandwidth routes. This local interconnection is making digital services faster, cheaper, and more reliable.

According to IXPN’s official website, this growth also means a stronger digital economy. The shift toward local traffic exchange has been one of the driving forces behind improved user experience and innovation in Nigeria’s online space.
