Miva Open University has opened its first physical learning centre in Lagos and introduced a new AI learning tool called MIND. The university held the launch event at 376 Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba, where students, teachers, government officials, and media gathered to celebrate.
The Yaba Study Centre marks a major step in Miva’s plan to combine online learning with in-person support. The new facility includes modern study rooms and a computer-based test (CBT) centre with 197 computers. It gives students a space to connect, study, and grow professionally.
During the event, Chancellor Sim Shagaya, who is also the Group CEO of uLesson, said the centre would help students build strong relationships and learn better. He explained that Miva plans to open similar centres across all 774 local government areas in Nigeria.
Miva Introduces MIND, an AI Study Assistant
Miva also unveiled MIND—short for Miva Interactive Neural Dialogue—an AI-powered tool that helps students have real-time conversations about their coursework. MIND gives students instant feedback on how they think, communicate, and understand lessons.
Right now, MIND is available to MBA students through Miva’s Learning Management System (LMS). Students can access the tool on their phones or laptops without visiting the Yaba Centre or paying extra.
Chief Content Officer AyoOluwa Nihinola said students can talk to MIND for 10 minutes after reading a case study. MIND then scores the conversation and shows where the student can improve. The tool checks how clearly students explain their thoughts and how well they understand the topic.
Vice Chancellor Professor Tayo Arulogun said MIND will help students become more confident in real-world situations. It prepares them for job interviews, presentations, and meetings by improving how they express themselves.
Miva’s Vision for the Future of Education
Sim Shagaya believes that AI and virtual reality will soon change the way people learn. He said students will be able to practice hands-on skills, like building bridges or performing medical procedures, using virtual reality in the next few years.
The Yaba Centre is ready to support these new technologies. It will help students who may not own advanced equipment at home access high-quality learning tools.
The launch event included a ribbon-cutting, a tour of the facility, and a live demo of MIND. Miva also hosted a career day on April 30 and plans to end the celebration with a community event on May 2, 2025.
Registrar Iheanyi Akwitti said Miva puts students first. He explained that the centre and tools like MIND were built to give students everything they need to succeed.
Miva plans to make MIND available to undergraduate students soon and hopes to share it with other schools across Nigeria, including public universities.
Founded by uLesson in 2023, Miva Open University already has over 2,700 students. It offers courses in computer science, business management, public health, and more. By mixing online classes, physical centres, and smart tools like MIND, Miva is helping solve Nigeria’s education challenges and shaping the future of learning in Africa.
