Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has unveiled a bold N15 billion development plan for the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano State — a move expected to transform the institution over the next five years.
Speaking at the university’s fifth combined convocation ceremony on Saturday, Dangote made the announcement shortly after being re-invested as Chancellor. He said the funds, to be managed by the Dangote Foundation, would fund the construction of a new senate building, additional student hostels, a cutting-edge engineering lab, and a fully-equipped computer laboratory with uninterrupted internet service.
He added that the Foundation would also offer automatic job placements to the university’s best graduating students across his companies nationwide. “This is part of our commitment to developing future leaders through quality education,” he stated.
Graduation Ceremony Sees 18,000 Students Celebrate
Vice Chancellor Professor Musa Yakasai shared that over 18,000 students across seven graduating sets were receiving their degrees during the ceremony. Out of this number, 2,950 were postgraduate students awarded with diplomas and higher degrees across various disciplines.
Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, who also spoke at the event, pledged to complete all university projects initiated by the previous administration. “We are dedicated to ensuring all ongoing state-backed projects at the institution are completed quickly to support its growth,” the governor assured.
University Honours Five Prominent Nigerians
The event also celebrated five distinguished individuals with honorary doctorate degrees for their contributions to society. Among the recipients were Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso, businessman Alhaji Dahiru Mangal, legal luminary Dr. Ahmed Adeniyi Raji (SAN), philanthropist Prince Arthur Eze, and public servant Alhaji Mustapha Ado Muhammad.
Senator Kwankwaso, speaking on behalf of the awardees, expressed gratitude to the university for the honour and encouraged graduating students to represent their alma mater with pride. “Be proud ambassadors of this university wherever your journey takes you,” he advised.
