Nigeria’s 9mobile has rebranded to T2, unveiling plans to become a digital-first telecom operator built on innovation, agility and customer experience.

At the Lagos launch event, Chief Executive Officer Obafemi Banigbe called the move “a strategic overhaul rather than just a new name,” adding: “We are no longer who we were; we are becoming something greater, more ambitious, and more in tune with the future.”

T2’s vision includes a full transition to digital operations, powered by cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence and advanced analytics for faster rollouts and tailored products. The approach targets Nigeria’s growing network of startups, creatives and remote workers demanding more flexible digital solutions.

Banigbe acknowledged the brand’s past struggles, describing them as “reminders, not defeats,” and dedicated the rebrand to “every Nigerian dreaming of something better.” Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, joined other industry stakeholders at the ceremony.

The change follows a three-year national roaming deal signed with MTN Nigeria in July, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission, enabling T2 customers to access MTN’s nationwide network for improved coverage, especially in underserved areas.

Launched in 2008 as Etisalat Nigeria, the company grew rapidly with 3G and 4G LTE services before financial troubles in 2017 led to Etisalat Group’s exit. It re-emerged as 9mobile, later acquired by Teleology Holdings Limited in 2018.

I am passionate about crafting stories, vibing to good music (and making some too), debating Nigeria’s political future like it’s the World Cup, and finding the perfect quiet spot to work and unwind.
