Google Offers AI Tools to Empower African StudentsGoogle has launched a new initiative to help African students explore the growing world of artificial intelligence (AI). The tech giant is offering 12 months of free access to its premium Google AI Pro tools for university students in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, and Mozambique.
The programme aims to help young innovators develop key skills needed to thrive in a digital economy and compete on a global scale. Eligible students aged 18 and above can apply between October 7 and December 9, 2025, by visiting gemini.google/students.
Building Africa’s Future Through AIAccording to Alex Okosi, Google’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, the initiative is part of Google’s wider goal to make technology accessible to all.
“We are seeing a new wave of innovation in Africa, driven by the energy and ingenuity of our young people,” Okosi said. “By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them not only to excel in their studies but also to become critical builders and shapers of the future.”
This plan, he explained, is about democratising access to technology and equipping African students with the right skills to lead globally.
What Students Stand to Gain
Students who sign up for the Google AI Pro plan will have access to advanced AI suites designed to boost learning, creativity, and productivity.
They can use Guided Learning for research assistance, Deep Research to generate detailed, cited reports from hundreds of web sources, and NotebookLM to organise study materials and ideas. The package also includes Veo 3, a creative AI video tool that can turn text or images into short, high-quality videos for school projects.
Additionally, users receive 2 TB of free cloud storage across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos — enough to store coursework, research data, and creative projects.
