WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature that feels familiar but looks far more polished. The company has reintroduced its classic “About” section as a short text update that works almost the same way as Instagram Notes. The update is already visible to many users and is expected to reach everyone gradually.
The feature, now appearing at the top of chats, allows people to share quick thoughts, simple updates or reasons they may not be available. It acts like a tiny status that appears above one-on-one conversations, giving contacts a small glimpse of what someone is up to. Users can tap these updates and reply immediately, which makes interactions feel more spontaneous.
A Throwback With a New Purpose
When WhatsApp first launched, it was a simple status-sharing app long before it became a major messaging platform. The company says the original “About” update was its very first feature. “WhatsApp was all about short updates,” the platform explained while revealing the revamped tool. Now the feature has returned in a more prominent form.

Users can decide how long their WhatsApp Notes stay visible. The default timer is 24 hours, although it can be shortened or extended. Visibility controls are also available, allowing people to choose whether everyone, contacts only or a smaller audience can view the update. These controls mirror many of WhatsApp’s current privacy settings.
The feature remains simple compared with Instagram Notes, which now supports short video clips and displays the music someone is listening to. However, WhatsApp Notes focuses on quick text rather than multimedia, keeping the experience lightweight and distraction-free.
More updates could arrive later as WhatsApp continues to push lightweight social features that keep users engaged inside the app.
