OpenAI has shut down Sora, its AI-powered video-generation tool, bringing an abrupt end to what had been shaping up as a landmark $1 billion partnership with the Walt Disney Co.
The Sora team confirmed the closure on Tuesday, 24 March, in a post on X. The announcement caught many off guard — including Disney. According to Reuters, the entertainment giant only learned of the shutdown 30 minutes after wrapping up a meeting with OpenAI on Monday.
The message from the Sora team was candid. “We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built a community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work.”
Disney, for its part, responded with measured composure. A company spokesperson said Disney respects OpenAI’s decision to discontinue the product and remains open to future collaboration.
A Company Changing Direction
The shutdown is not simply about one product. It signals something much bigger happening inside OpenAI.
The company is now steering towards robotics, enterprise solutions, and the development of artificial general intelligence, commonly known as AGI. As part of this shift, OpenAI is also building what it describes as a unified “super-app” — a single platform designed to serve both individual users and large corporate clients.
Leadership changes are following suit. Fidji Simo’s role has evolved to centre on AGI deployment. Meanwhile, CEO Sam Altman has stepped back from direct oversight of safety and security operations.
Internally, Sora had long been a drain on resources. The tool’s high computational demands made it increasingly difficult for OpenAI to scale other projects — and ultimately, that tension proved too costly to ignore.
The decision also arrives at a moment of intensifying competition. Rivals such as Anthropic are gaining ground fast, particularly among developers and enterprise users drawn to coding-focused AI tools.
OpenAI has said it will share further details soon, including timelines for the app and API wind-down, as well as options for users to preserve their work.
