Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has revealed that four new data centers are currently under construction in the city. This significant tech investment aims to boost the state’s digital infrastructure and support its growing tech ecosystem.
The governor shared this update on Tuesday at the Lagos House Marina during a visit by Sweden’s Crown Princess, Her Royal Highness Princess Alice Desiree, and her team. Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat represented Governor Sanwo-Olu at the event.
Lagos Expands Tech Infrastructure with Fibre Optics and Data Centers
Dr Hamzat explained that Lagos is building four new data centers with a massive 6,800km fiber optic cable network across the state to improve internet access and speed. The government has already completed 3,500km in the first phase.
He also revealed that global tech companies are showing strong interest in Lagos. “Google is building a data center here, and several other companies are also constructing theirs,” he said. “Right now, four data centers are under construction. Lagos is becoming a major tech hub.”
According to the deputy governor, Lagos is the perfect location for tech growth because of its large population of over 22 million people—double the population of Sweden. He added that the presence of big companies proves international confidence in the state’s tech future.
Sweden Applauds Lagos’ Growth and Opens Trade Office
Crown Princess Alice Desiree praised Lagos for its strong economy and fast-growing business environment. She said Sweden sees many opportunities to work with Nigeria and is excited about strengthening partnerships.
“We are happy to be in Lagos and explore ways to grow the Swedish-Nigerian relationship. We see great potential,” she said.
Sweden’s Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Andreas Carlson, also spoke at the event. He confirmed that the Swedish government is opening its first trade office in Nigeria, with Lagos as the ideal location.
“The Crown Princess will officially open the Swedish Trade Office here in Lagos today. We believe Lagos is the right place to start,” Carlson said. He added that Sweden wants to build stronger ties with Lagos and Nigeria, especially in digital innovation and green technology.
