In a fresh move to strengthen Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has partnered with Mastercard to train professionals on how to better handle citizens’ data. The collaboration, which serves as a prelude to the upcoming NADPA-RAPDP Conference and Annual General Meeting, was marked by a joint workshop on Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) for Data Protection Officers in both the public and private sectors.
The event was also the stage for the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NDPC and Mastercard. The deal is aimed at deepening cooperation between both entities in promoting global best practices for data governance in Nigeria.
“This MoU shows the world that doing business in Nigeria can be both secure and impactful,” said Dr Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC. He expressed gratitude to Mastercard for its continued support and urged workshop participants to take full advantage of the training opportunity.
Representing Mastercard, Derek Ho, Deputy Chief Privacy, AI & Data Responsibility Officer, praised the Commission’s commitment to human capital development. “Workshops like this ensure that participants understand the real-world application of conducting a DPIA,” he said, adding that Mastercard looks forward to further collaboration.
About 150 officers from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) were selected to participate in the workshop. With growing concerns over digital privacy, the training is expected to empower stakeholders with essential tools and knowledge for safeguarding personal data.
