As Nigeria’s digital space rapidly expands, Dr Agabi has issued a pressing appeal for greater responsibility and cyber awareness across all levels of governance and society. His remarks come amid a spike in digital threats, from targeted hacking and phishing scams to online abuse, all of which pose serious risks to individuals, businesses, and the economy.
“We must encourage Internet users to take responsibility for their online actions at the local, regional, national, and international levels,” Dr Agabi stressed during a recent address, advocating for stronger public education on digital safety.
He warned that Nigeria’s increasing dependence on digital platforms has exposed new vulnerabilities, making it urgent to prioritise national conversations around responsible Internet use and digital citizenship.
Collaboration Key to Safer Digital Ecosystem
Highlighting the need for a multi-sectoral approach, Dr Agabi called on government agencies, the private sector, and civil society to join forces in building a more secure digital environment. According to him, achieving “cyber sanity” will require unified efforts that cut across institutions, communities, and individual citizens.
Among his top recommendations were the implementation of broader cyber awareness campaigns to sensitise citizens, promotion of respectful and responsible online behaviour, and the reinforcement of cybersecurity infrastructure to match the evolving threat landscape. He also stressed the urgency of creating policies and frameworks that enforce ethical and safe digital practices.
Dr Agabi’s address concluded with a strong call to the Nigerian government and the National Assembly to prioritise cyber responsibility across all platforms of governance.
