Nigeria has taken a fresh step to strengthen its online security. A new system has been introduced to protect users and businesses operating within the country’s internet space.

The Nigeria Internet Registration Association has deployed DNS Security Extensions on the .ng domain. The announcement was made during a workshop held in Lagos.

This move places Nigeria among countries adopting stronger internet security measures. It also signals a push towards a more secure digital economy.

DNSSEC is designed to protect users from cyber threats. It helps prevent attackers from redirecting traffic to fake or harmful websites. With this system, users can trust that they are visiting the correct online destination.

DNSSEC rollout strengthens Nigeria cybersecurity

The DNSSEC Nigeria rollout introduces a new layer of protection. It uses cryptographic checks to verify the authenticity of websites.

According to NiRA President, Adesola Akinsanya, the deployment marks a key moment. “As more critical services move online, it is essential that we provide a secure and trusted digital environment for citizens, businesses, and government.”

He added that the step aligns with global standards. “This milestone reflects our commitment to global best practices and to building a resilient digital future for Nigeria.”

The system is expected to protect sectors that rely heavily on digital platforms. These include banking, telecoms, e-commerce, and government services.

Institutions regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Communications Commission could benefit from improved protection against phishing and spoofing attacks.

A phased rollout begins

The deployment has already been completed at the core level. The .ng domain zone is now fully secured and under monitoring.

Next, a phased rollout will allow domain owners and registrars to adopt the system. This ensures a smoother transition across the ecosystem.

NiRA’s Chief Operating Officer, Seyi Onasanya, explained the approach. “While the .ng zone has now been securely signed, our focus is on ensuring a smooth rollout and driving adoption among registrars and domain owners.”

The initiative aligns with national digital goals supported by the National Information Technology Development Agency and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
