The Abia State Government has signed a major agreement with MTN Nigeria to fast-track its digital transformation plans. The deal, which was announced during a press briefing in Umuahia, aims to improve internet access, boost innovation, and support small businesses across the state.
Six Focus Areas in the MTN Partnership
Commissioner for Information, Mr. Okey Kanu, explained that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focuses on six key areas to help modernize Abia by the end of 2025.
1. Broadband Internet for All
MTN will provide high-speed internet across the entire state, including remote villages. This will ensure every resident can enjoy reliable broadband access, helping connect more people to digital opportunities.
2. Devices for Civil Servants
MTN will also offer a financing plan that lets Abia State workers own laptops, smartphones, and Wi-Fi devices. This device scheme will help them perform their jobs better and support the state’s digital goals.
3. Improved Digital Governance
The plan includes cloud services and new technology tools for the government. These upgrades will improve how government offices work, making services faster and more transparent for the public.
4. Launch of Abia Digital Mall
The state and MTN will build an Abia Digital Mall to support small businesses and the informal economy. This platform will help traders use digital tools to grow their businesses and reach more customers.
5. Rollout of 4G and 5G Networks
MTN will roll out 4G and 5G services in key cities like Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia. These faster networks will improve internet speed and reliability for businesses and residents.
6. Digital Marketplace for Government and E-commerce
Finally, the MoU includes plans for a digital marketplace that supports online shopping and e-governance. This platform will make it easier for residents to interact with government services and shop online.
A Bold Move for Abia’s Future
His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, the Governor of Abia State
Governor Alex Otti described the agreement as a big step toward making Abia a tech-driven economy and innovation center. He promised to support the project fully and said it would create new opportunities, especially for young people.
MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Dr. Karl Toriola, said the partnership shows how private and public sectors can work together to build a digital society. He added that MTN’s goal is to help everyone enjoy the benefits of a connected world.
Top MTN leaders, including Lynda Saint-Nwafor, Shoyinka Shodunke, and Omotayo Ojutalayo, also attended the event.
Project Impact and Community Benefits
Commissioner Kanu said the new programs would especially benefit rural communities by allowing them to do business from remote areas. He added that the project will boost productivity and support Abia’s economic growth.
Kanu also praised the Abia Warriors Football Club for their strong performance in the Nigerian Professional Football League. With one game left, the team is close to earning a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup.
He said the football team’s success reflects the broader progress happening in Abia State under the current administration.
