Sweden has officially launched its largest innovation hub in Lagos, marking a major investment in African tech. The announcement came during Crown Princess Victoria’s visit to Abuja, where she met Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima.
The innovation centre is Sweden’s biggest in Africa and a significant step in strengthening Sweden Nigeria relations. Both countries reaffirmed their plans to deepen cooperation across trade, gender inclusion, and cultural exchange. The three-day royal visit reflects a growing interest in Nigeria as a strategic partner.
Tech Collaboration Gains Momentum
During the meeting, Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, Andreas Carlson, described Nigeria as a hub of opportunity. He confirmed that Lagos is now home to the largest innovation hub in Africa, backed by Sweden.
“This will shape a better future for tomorrow for our people,” Carlson said, adding that the tech collaboration goes beyond business. He revealed Sweden’s trade office in Nigeria would launch soon, signalling long-term engagement. The Lagos-based innovation hub is one of five built across Africa.
“We see opportunities in health, agriculture, and renewable energy,” he added, referencing a strong business foundation built over 65 years of Sweden Nigeria relations.
Nigeria Embraces Sweden’s Tech Push
Vice President Shettima welcomed the opening of the innovation hub in Lagos and praised Sweden’s proactive role in boosting digital infrastructure. He highlighted a recent Memorandum of Understanding signed with Ericsson to expand 5G innovation in Nigeria.
“We’re especially excited about renewable energy, healthcare innovation, and precision agriculture—areas where Sweden has much to offer,” Shettima said. He also applauded SchoolTry, a Swedish edtech firm, for its impact on Nigeria’s educational system.
Crown Princess Victoria emphasised that the trade office and tech hub would strengthen bilateral ties. “It’s wonderful to see the opportunities that are here,” she said, calling the two nations strong partners in critical sectors.
