Fintech giant OPay has expanded its N1.2 billion scholarship program to Kwara State Polytechnic, making it the first polytechnic to benefit from the 10-year education investment. This move marks a major step in OPay’s plan to support higher education across Nigeria. In a statement on Wednesday, OPay announced that 20 students from Kwara State Polytechnic would each receive scholarships worth N300,000.

The company explained that the scholarship aims to ease financial burdens for students and allow them to focus on their academic and personal growth. According to OPay, the program goes beyond financial help — it is part of a larger strategy to build future leaders and innovators in Nigeria.

OPay’s Commitment to Building Nigeria’s Future

Dauda Gotring, OPay’s Managing Director and CEO, said the scholarship initiative shows the company’s commitment to helping talented students achieve their dreams. “Through this 10-year scholarship program, we are not just easing today’s financial stress; we are preparing a generation that will drive innovation and progress,” Gotring stated.

Launched in 2023, the scholarship program plans to support 400 students every year for a decade. OPay’s decision to include Kwara State Polytechnic highlights its focus on ensuring students from all parts of Nigeria benefit from the opportunity.

Abdul Mohammed, Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, praised the scholarship program, calling it a much-needed boost for students. He said the financial support would motivate the selected students to work harder and achieve academic success.

Mohammed thanked OPay for choosing Kwara State Polytechnic and stressed the positive impact it would have not only on the students’ studies but also on their personal development.

OPay Strengthens Its Social Impact Mission

Founded in 2018, OPay has quickly grown into one of Nigeria’s leading fintech companies. It offers services like mobile money transfers, bill payments, and merchant solutions. The company operates with licenses from the Central Bank of Nigeria and insurance from the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Through its scholarship program, OPay is deepening its social responsibility efforts. The company believes that improving education will lead to a stronger, more inclusive economy. By supporting students financially, OPay hopes to create a new generation of skilled workers who can drive Nigeria’s digital economy forward.

Helping Polytechnic Students Close the Skills Gap

By extending scholarships to polytechnics, OPay shows that vocational and technical education matters just as much as university degrees. For years, most scholarships focused only on universities. However, polytechnics play a crucial role in preparing students for technical jobs that are in high demand.

According to recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics, many young Nigerians remain unemployed due to a lack of practical skills. Scholarships targeting polytechnic students will help close this gap by providing the training and education needed to fill technical roles.

OPay Leads by Example in Education Support

OPay’s scholarship program sets a strong example for how fintech companies can contribute to human capital development. By focusing on accessibility, inclusion, and long-term benefits, OPay is not just supporting students financially — it is investing in Nigeria’s future.

As the program moves forward, many expect OPay to expand the scholarship to even more institutions across different regions. For now, all eyes are on Kwara State Polytechnic, where 20 students are ready to start their academic journey with the financial support and motivation to dream bigger.
