Elon Musk’s X platform has crossed a major global milestone after recording more than one billion downloads worldwide.
The announcement came directly from Musk on Sunday through a post on X. The billionaire entrepreneur reshared an update celebrating the platform’s growing reach and rapid transformation since he acquired Twitter in 2022.
The milestone places X among a small group of mobile apps that have crossed the billion-download mark globally. The list includes platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok.
The update also revealed that the app currently holds a 4.3-star rating from more than 22.9 million reviews across mobile platforms.
X platform keeps expanding
Since Musk completed the $44 billion takeover of Twitter, the company has changed aggressively.
The platform no longer focuses only on short text posts. Instead, Musk has continued pushing X toward becoming what he calls an “everything app”.
Several new services have appeared on the X platform over the last two years. Users can now access long-form videos, hiring tools, real-time news updates and AI-powered features through Grok AI.
The company has also expanded X Payments in selected markets as it moves deeper into financial services. “𝕏 now has over a billion downloads,” Musk wrote while reacting to the announcement.
The post quickly gained traction across the platform as users discussed how far X has evolved since the Twitter era.
A separate update shared by Tesla Owners Silicon Valley described the platform as more than a traditional social media app.
“Since Elon Musk’s takeover X has transformed far beyond a traditional social media app with AI video payments hiring and real-time news all being pushed into a single platform,” the account stated.
Growth comes with challenges
Despite the latest growth, the X platform has faced several difficult moments under Musk’s leadership.
Many advertisers pulled spending from the platform after concerns around content moderation and brand safety emerged. Musk also faced criticism over policy changes and public disagreements involving regulators and media organisations.Still, the platform has managed to retain strong global attention.
The company’s push into video content, AI services and creator monetisation has helped attract users searching for alternatives to existing platforms.
Emerging markets have also played a major role in the platform’s expansion. Countries like India, Brazil and Indonesia continue showing strong mobile-first adoption trends. At the same time, Musk has repeatedly defended his approach to free speech and platform openness.
