The Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, announced a N10 Million Excellence in Tax Reform Reporting Award on Friday at the Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos. The tax reform journalism award was disclosed during an interactive session with journalists, influencers, and thought leaders in the business, tax, and economy ecosystem, aimed at clarifying the new tax reform laws.
Judging the Truth-Tellers
Oloyede disclosed that the prize was meant to “recognize and reward journalists and online influencers who provide balanced, accurate, and impactful reporting on Nigeria’s ongoing tax reforms.” He urged journalists to engage the tax reforms without playing to the gallery as the “award seeks to strengthen constructive public discourse, counter misinformation, and elevate journalism that explains reforms in ways citizens can trust and understand.”
While urging participation, he stressed that the prize is open to all Nigerian journalists across print, broadcast, and online platforms, as well as digital influencers and podcasters. Apart from the N10 Million for the first prize winner, the second and third prize winners will go home with N5Million and N3 Million respectively. Also, the top 20 finalists will receive N1m Consolation Prize each with plaques. The Committee is also seeking reputable partners to enable the prize award, gadgets, and training fellowships to selected journalists.
How to Qualify for the Tax Reform Journalism Award
According to a press release made available to journalists, “the prize will evaluate accuracy and technical correctness, balance and fairness, clarity and accessibility, public engagement and reach, creativity and innovation. Applications will open via the official portal by the end of the year, fiscalreforms.ng.” Oloyede also added that respected journalists, thought leaders, and global development partners will comprise the judges to ensure transparency.
Giving reasons for establishing the prize, he said that the media plays a crucial role in informing Nigerians. This role includes dispelling misinformation on the government policy direction. “The media is central in shaping narratives and building public trust. By equipping and rewarding journalists and influencers, we aim to ensure that the tax reform conversation is constructive, inclusive, and anchored in truth. This is why we build public confidence in reforms designed to secure our nation’s future.”
Also at the event, the Chairman fielded questions from journalists present on several important issues, including cryptocurrency taxation and the responsibility of remote workers to self-report or face tax penalties.
