The end of the year is approaching, but it is doing so in the most desirable fashion possible, with cheerful Christmas colours, shared memories, road trips, and a much-needed break in the hectic tech life. To most tech enthusiasts, it is the opportunity to turn off their gadgets, forget about their deadlines and take a breath and enjoy, after all, that’s what “Detty December” is for them. To others, it is an opportunity to get a win and reflect on what they have accomplished.
As the tech ecosystem grows in Nigeria, it is no longer about the end-of-year meetups, but rather about something less formal: where can tech enthusiasts actually go to unwind and make these short breaks feel worth it? These are just a few of the best choices and why they are so good.
Calabar
Calabar must be first on your list in case you are in need of culture, colours and a full-on festive parade. Every December, the city is on its feet with the legendary Calabar Christmas Carnival. Obudu Mountain Resort, just a few hours, will be a good place to get a respite of the buzz, and enjoy the scenery, cooler climate and blissful strolls.

Why Calabar is A Lovely Place:
- A world-famous carnival
- Traditional rich performances.
- Local cuisine such as Afang soup and nkwobi.
Lagos
Lagos during Christmas is loud, busy and has a variety of options and this is what techies would love since they enjoy energy, events and people. This is the city to be in if you love energy. Getting handcrafted presents at Lekki market, spending your time on a boat ride to Tarkwa Bay or having a Christmas concert on the Island are only some of the things to do on the Island.

To others, the actual Lagos vacation would be to rent a beach house, invite friends, game, grill, and simply tell stories without being too far away, yet close enough to good food and high speed internet. Plan around traffic. It’s part of the Christmas charm, but it can be unpredictable.
Other Serene Spots
For Tech Enthusiasts who need to emotionally check out of the grid, cities such as Ibadan, towns in Osun State like Ile-Ife, Abeokuta and other inland destinations have more natural nature and with less stress. It is not necessarily it must be Lagos. Once in a while, you just need to refresh.
The Olumo Rock in Abeokuta is an example of such a combination of light adventure and cultural history, whereas smaller towns and resorts in the Southwest or Middle Belt offer greenery, rivers, and a place to think without being interrupted.

These are perfect when people who feel that Lagos is artificial and would prefer to swap skyscrapers for rocks, trees, and food in villages.
Techies Speak: Deborah & Jesse
Deborah Omotara Tech Enthusiast
For Deborah, choosing a detty December holiday destination as a tech professional goes beyond just picking a fun location. She feels that techies should have facilities to enable them to unwind their minds after months of problem solving, deadlines, and prolonged screen time.
Deborah highlighted 3 significant factors:
Good internet, since–even when they are not working–the techies tend to feel comfortable staying connected; A calm atmosphere, which is easier to think and balance; and inspiring places. She said that a vacation does not necessarily have to be noisy or congested.
Other times, the best place to be is where you get to experience little things like taking a moment and watching beautiful views in cafes, enjoying the landscapes or just being in a different cultural setting in order to open your mind.
Another crucial point that Deborah made was the advantage of exposure to new environments. It can be an old city or a new, well-developing one, but in any case, she thinks that travelling can bring certain influence to the perspectives of technologists, their ideas of new solutions, and even the choice of a profession. A quality trip to her is one that makes you feel refreshed and possibly a bit wiser.

Jesse – A Tech Enthusiast
Jesse, a Product Manager, has a more grounded view of holidays: “It’s called a holiday for a reason,” he said. Quietness is the ingredient that is critical to him. After a rough year with so many tasks completed, the last thing he wants to do is go on a trip that feels like an extension of work. According to him, although it is beneficial to remain connected (primarily to exchange experiences or update loved ones), the trip should not revolve around productivity.
A holiday, on the contrary, must feel like a breath of fresh air after spending months in the city. On questions concerning certain places that would appeal to techies, Jesse had a refreshing take: he doesn’t think that there’s a specific place or that there are places for techies to visit during the yuletide period.
The choice of a holiday is more personal to him. There are those who enjoy the hustle and bustle of tourist destinations such as Dubai due to the fun and side attractions. Others, like him, prefer calm and nature.
One of his friends works as a web developer, and would pick Dubai in a second–and he knows why. It is also modern, lively, secure and packed. However, he prefers the quieter and softer destinations in Nigeria.
His own idea of a perfect holiday consists of:
- A beach house on the Lagos Island shoreline
- A short trip to Ibadan.
He said, “Lagos is fun, but at times it is too artificial for me. To him, the true vacation is getting in touch with nature, not with nightlife or city sounds.
As Tech Enthusiasts, what are your plans this yuletide?
