IHS Nigeria, a leading provider of shared telecom infrastructure, has entered a strategic alliance with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to fortify the country’s telecommunications network. The deal comes amid increasing threats to telecom towers, fibre cables, and other infrastructure vital to Nigeria’s digital economy.
Through a recently signed memorandum of understanding (MoU), IHS Nigeria and the NSCDC plan to strengthen protection around critical sites. The MoU outlines plans to combat theft and vandalism affecting over 16,000 towers and 15,000km of fibre owned and managed by IHS in Nigeria. This partnership marks a renewed effort to uphold the nation’s communications infrastructure, which the law classifies as critical national information infrastructure.
A Strategic Collaboration
The MoU sets the stage for a coordinated security response. The NSCDC is expected to support IHS in surveillance, emergency response, and incident reporting. Their collaboration will also cover site decommissioning and prosecution of violators who sabotage telecom assets.
“At IHS we are key enablers of connectivity, and this partnership with the NSCDC is for us an important step towards enhancing the resilience, reliability and availability of telecommunications connectivity in Nigeria,” said Mohamad Darwish, CEO of IHS Nigeria.
He added that closer cooperation with NSCDC is crucial to ensuring service quality and protecting assets that power connectivity across Nigeria.
Commandant General of the NSCDC, Ahmad Abubakar, echoed the sentiment. “We consider IHS to be a strategic partner whose infrastructure is essential to the operations of many organisations across the country. We aim to provide a heightened level of operational excellence and support, focused on securing telecommunications infrastructure more effectively than ever before,” he said.
