Nigeria’s Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN) has introduced a refreshing initiative designed to lift the country’s creative sector. Tailors and fashion entrepreneurs in Abuja can now access fully equipped workspaces, complete with sewing machines and stable electricity, for just N300 daily.

The new scheme, unveiled under the guidance of SMEDAN’s Director General, hopes to ease major hurdles for small businesses. By offering facilities without the burden of purchasing machines or paying steep rental fees, SMEDAN aims to empower creative talents to flourish. Already, young tailors across Northern Nigeria are embracing the opportunity to boost their production and earnings.

A concerned citizen who visited the Abuja centre shared a video online, urging Nigerians to take advantage of the offer. Inspired by what she witnessed, she pledged to sponsor 10 dedicated fashion designers — five from Instagram and five from X (formerly Twitter) — granting them free access to the facility for 30 days. “I want only serious and committed people to benefit from this,” she said, highlighting her desire to invest in passionate entrepreneurs.

Expanding Beyond Fashion

While fashion designers have quickly embraced the project, SMEDAN is extending its support to other industries too. Carpenters and recyclers now enjoy similar access to essential tools and uninterrupted electricity, helping them build sustainable ventures with minimal startup costs.

The broader ambition behind this initiative is clear: create an inclusive environment where micro and small business owners across sectors can thrive. By removing the traditional barriers of high overhead costs, SMEDAN is paving the way for a new generation of entrepreneurs determined to succeed.

I am passionate about crafting stories, vibing to good music (and making some too), debating Nigeria’s political future like it’s the World Cup, and finding the perfect quiet spot to work and unwind.
