The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has warned Nigerians to update their Google Chrome browsers after the discovery of serious security flaws.
In a public advisory shared on its official X handle, the Commission explained that hackers could exploit the vulnerabilities to take control of affected devices. The threat is considered severe because it allows malicious actors to run harmful code without permission.
“Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Google Chrome. The most severe of these could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on a user’s system,” the Commission stated.
Risks of Ignoring the Warning
According to the NDPC, successful attacks could give hackers the ability to install unauthorised programmes, delete or alter personal files, and even create new accounts with full administrative rights. Such breaches could expose sensitive data, disrupt normal operations, and leave users locked out of their own systems.
Cybersecurity analysts say this type of flaw is dangerous because it provides a direct path into personal and corporate networks. They stress that browsers are among the most frequently targeted applications, making regular updates critical for safety.
How Users can Protect Themselves
The Commission urged users to install the latest Chrome updates immediately, as Google has already issued patches for the vulnerabilities. It also advised people to avoid clicking suspicious links, opening unsolicited email attachments, or visiting untrusted websites.
Beyond updates, experts suggest operating under standard user rights rather than administrator privileges. This limits the extent of potential damage if an account is compromised.
The warning comes as global concern about data security continues to rise. Google Chrome, which holds over 60% of global browser market share, has faced repeated security challenges in recent years. Authorities in Nigeria say timely action from users is crucial to avoid large-scale breaches.
