The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has officially opened its inaugural African Trade Centre (AATC) in Abuja, Nigeria, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing trade and investment across the continent. This facility is envisioned as a central hub for fostering intra-African commerce and economic integration.

During the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Dr. George Akume, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasised the centre’s significance: “AATC stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, resilience and forward-thinking leadership. It is more than a physical structure; it is the beginning of innovation, a hub for entrepreneurship and a catalyst for sustainable development.”

A Vision for Continental Integration

The Abuja AATC is the first in a series of centres planned across Africa and the Caribbean, including locations in Kampala, Harare, Cairo, Yaoundé, Tunis, Kigali, and Bridgetown. These centres aim to serve as lighthouses guiding the flow of trade and investment within Africa and between Africa and the Caribbean.

Prof. Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank, highlighted the centre’s multifaceted role: “This AATC will also offer a technology incubation hub, an SME incubation facility, a Digital Africa Trade Gateway, a conference and exhibition facility and a business hotel.

Architectural and Environmental Excellence

Designed by SVA International, the AATC comprises two interconnected nine-storey towers. One tower houses commercial office spaces, a trade and exhibition centre, and a technology incubator, while the adjoining tower features a 148-room business hotel, seminar rooms, and wellness facilities. The design draws inspiration from the concept of a bazaar, reflecting the vibrant nature of African commerce.

The building is expected to achieve at least a gold certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), underscoring its commitment to sustainability.

A Gathering of Influential Leaders

The inauguration attracted over 500 distinguished guests, including government officials, business leaders, and entrepreneurs. Notable attendees were Hon. William F. Duguid from Barbados, Hon. Sylvester Grisby from Liberia, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance Hon. Adebayo Olawale Edun, and business magnates like Aliko Dangote and Tony Elumelu. Their presence signified a collective commitment to leveraging the AATC for Africa’s economic transformation.

The establishment of the Abuja AATC represents a significant milestone in Afreximbank’s mission to promote intra-African trade and investment. By providing a comprehensive ecosystem for business activities, the centre is poised to play a crucial role in shaping Africa’s economic future.

I am passionate about crafting stories, vibing to good music (and making some too), debating Nigeria’s political future like it’s the World Cup, and finding the perfect quiet spot to work and unwind.
