NITDA to Hold Startup Forum in Abuja to Shape Nigeria’s Innovation Policy

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) will host its Startup Consultative Forum on April 28 in Abuja. The forum will bring together startups, investors, and tech support organizations to nominate members for Nigeria’s Startup Council.

Mrs. Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, announced the event in a statement on Tuesday.

She said the forum marks a major step in getting more stakeholders involved in Nigeria’s growing startup sector. According to her, “This first forum is a key moment for deepening engagement in our fast-changing startup ecosystem.”

The event, guided by the Nigeria Startup Act (NSA), will allow startup founders, tech innovators, and support groups to help shape national policies that support growth, bring in investments, and push digital innovation.

Furthermore, Umar said, “The forum gives room for real conversations. It’s a chance for key players to help design policies that support startups and the tech industry.”

Background on the Nigerian Startup Act

To give some context, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Nigeria Startup Act into law on October 19, 2022. The law provides a strong legal and institutional foundation to help startups grow in Nigeria.

Notably, it created the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship, also called the Startup Council, and introduced incentives like a startup seed fund and a simpler registration process for new businesses.

Currently, NITDA, in collaboration with other tech stakeholders, leads the Act’s implementation across the country.

Importantly, Umar stated that one of the forum’s key goals is to select members for the Startup Council, which will serve as the top advisory group for Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.

She explained further, “Outcomes from this event will shape inclusive startup policies and ensure that the voices of Nigeria’s tech innovators are heard.”

NITDA Calls on Stakeholders to Join the Forum

Therefore, NITDA invites labelled startups, verified support organizations, angel investors, venture capitalists, and other key players to join the event and take part in the nomination and voting process.

“We urge everyone in the startup space to come out and take part in building Nigeria’s digital future,” Umar said.
