The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have teamed up to lower the heavy cost of powering telecom sites with diesel. Together, they launched a new initiative to replace diesel generators with renewable energy across Nigeria’s telecom infrastructure, especially in rural and underserved areas.

In a joint effort, the NCC and REA formed the NCC–REA Collaboration Committee. This team will work on powering telecom towers with solar and other renewable energy sources. The move aims to cut the $350 million spent yearly on diesel by telecom operators in Nigeria.

A 2025 report by the Africa Finance Corporation revealed that telecom companies in Nigeria burn over 40 million litres of diesel each month to power their equipment.

During the launch of the committee at the NCC Headquarters in Abuja, NCC Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida described the partnership as both strategic and timely. He said it reflects the country’s push to improve both power and digital access in remote areas.

A Bold Step Toward Inclusion and Sustainability

Dr. Maida stressed that using renewable energy goes beyond saving money. It also helps connect more communities, reduce inequality, and create better opportunities for Nigerians.

“This effort is not just about powering telecom towers. It’s about giving more people access to digital services, like online learning and communication,” he said. “We’re aligning this project with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ensuring no community is left behind.”

Also speaking at the event, REA Managing Director Abba Aliyu said the partnership will bring big benefits, especially to areas that lack electricity and reliable internet. He believes the project will support sustainable development for millions of people.

Key Plans for the NCC-REA Committee

The NCC–REA Collaboration Committee will:

  • Deploy clean energy to telecom towers
  • Share geospatial data to improve planning
  • Align funding to support the rollout
  • Track the impact of the project through clear performance goals

The agencies believe this move will reduce reliance on costly fuel, promote green energy, and boost digital access across Nigeria.

This partnership signals a new chapter in Nigeria’s journey to connect more people while protecting the environment.
