The Obidient Movement has taken a major step towards formalising its growing base by unveiling an online registration platform and identity cards for members both within Nigeria and across the globe.
In a statement released on Saturday by the movement’s National Coordinator, Dr Yunusa Tanko, and its Director of Strategic Communications and Media, Nana Kazaure, it was revealed that the identity cards would reflect the flag of each cardholder’s country of residence. This feature, the movement noted, symbolises the diversity and reach of its message.
The identity cards are designed with a QR code positioned at the bottom right corner, allowing members to verify the authenticity of each card easily using a smartphone or any QR scanning device. According to the statement, “Obidient registration portal supports Nigerians and fellow Obidients living in the diaspora. You will observe that the ID has a flag on it so, for example, if you’re not resident in Nigeria, the top right hand corner will carry the flag of your country of residence.”
A New Era of Verification and Unity
The Obidient Movement explained that every card, whether issued in Nigeria or abroad, bears the OBX prefix. Following the prefix are four characters—two letters and two numbers—that represent the state and local government area for Nigerian residents, while diaspora cards include a three-letter country code, such as GBR for the United Kingdom.
“The OBX is constant on the ID card. The Diasporan and Nigerian card, all start with the same prefix which is the OBX,” the statement elaborated. It further added that “The first 2 letters are for Nigerian State codes (for example Lagos state is LA and Delta is DE). The others are 2 digit numbers which represent the local government area where you are registered.”
The movement highlighted that for Nigerians abroad who identify with its ideals of sustainable governance and the mantra “A New Nigeria is Possible,” the design slightly differs to incorporate country-specific codes.
Additionally, to ensure members’ security, other digits on the card are randomly generated. The organisation stressed that there is no straightforward pattern, “so you cannot just guess the Obidient Movement’s codes and numbers,” noting that even prominent figures such as Peter Obi would not have easily predictable ID numbers.
Building Trust Among Obidients
The QR code offers a seamless way to verify a member’s authenticity. When scanned, it links directly to an online database for verification. The movement advised members to crosscheck details during any personal, professional, or financial engagements within the community.
“When you sign up and submit your form online, it goes through a verification process. So for example you put in your X handle, it makes it easier for verification,” the statement said. However, they warned members to conduct thorough due diligence independently before entering into agreements, cautioning against falling victim to bad actors despite the authentication features.
